For our Patients on Avandia

We are assessing the information released in the press and are concerned about the possibility that it might increase the risk for heart disease somewhat. But this is not yet an established fact and we need to review the actual data underlying the news reports.

In the meantime we also have to be concerned about maintaining diabetes control since poor control is also associated with increased risk for heart disease as well as many other serious complications. The best plan is to sit tight and not overreact while we are assessing the issue. For those with heart disease who are on Avandia or others who are concerned, they may choose to stop taking the medicine while we do this - but, if so, they need to work very hard on strict low carb diet, exercise, weight control and close glucose monitoring to assure good control.
